Good morning on this fine Saturday. Maybe you think I am tired or not with it, but yes, this is the author’s name and the title: U.R. Mine/Cheers. It rolls off the tongue and is cute. Hopefully we will hear a lot from this author as I enjoyed the story. I want to get right to it so is what is between the virtual covers:
“Author U.R. Mine tugs at you heart and soul with this intense and touching digital short story. Have you been married? Are you married? Are you thinking of getting married? This story is for anyone that has been in relationship and asks and answers all the right questions. It is short, sweet and worthy of the time; it will stick with you for a while.”
I was fortunate enough to have actually read this story on my anniversary. The timing was nothing short of amazing and it really hit home. Don’t want to give anything away, but I can totally identify with the characters, the husband and the wife. One does need to be married to get a firm hold on this story. U.R. Mine hits all the right notes and gets us to understand the characters’ plights rather quickly. She helps us to walk a mile in their shoes so to speak. For the buck, there is plenty of bang if you have any kind of heart, because that is where it is going to hit you. If you download this worthy story, take a minute and reflect on any relationship you might have with a friend or loved one after reading it. Spending the buck and the getting the read is only part of this story from U.R. Mine-Cheers!

Paul Levine Flesh & Bones
Hopefully I can get this right, because believe me I want to, on so many levels. First to just get this out of the way, this novel just flat out ROCKS! Now I have had the pleasure and honor of interviewing Paul Levine on my blogtalk show The G-ZONE last week. I know I mentioned this yesterday in my John Locke/Vegas Moon post, but the reason I point this out yet again is this: The guy’s voice, as smooth, kind and silky as it is, was in my head the entire time I was pressing the buttons on my Kindle, narrating the story for me. I am not going to place the usual synopsis of the story in this post, instead I am placing something about the novel and the good this is going to be doing for some sick kids, kids that have cancer, and the generosity of Paul Levine, an author that has won just about every major award an author can possibly win. Am I smooching fanny here, maybe, but it is all the truth, let it be said. The guy is first rate, a Hall of Fame author and a man with a huge heart for the right reasons. Basically you download this novel and the proceeds go to The Four Diamonds Club @ Penn State, The Hershey Children’s Hospital, for children’s cancer research and care. Nobody loses here, an awesome read, a great cause, a win –win for everyone.
Back to the voice in my head, yes, it is said I hear many, but this was just over the top. Lassiter is one smart $%^ that is a fun read. Levine creates so many layers, so many rich characters, describes his environment so well that it makes this novel so irresistible it is not funny. The hardest part for me after reading this , is that during the interview ,Paul Levine said that the next novel he has coming out in the fall, his newest Lassiter novel is probably his best work .To be able to say that after reading this, that my friends is a statement. I will be glad to stand in the virtual line for that one; hopefully I will be able to get him back on the show before that. PLEASE READ THIS:
BACKSTORY: WHY AUTHOR DONATES TO “CONQUER CHILDHOOD CANCER”
“Flesh & Bones,” the last of the bestselling Jake Lassiter thrillers, is now an e-book. Author Paul Levine explains why he has pledged all royalties to childhood cancer treatment and research.
By Paul Levine
In the United States today, one in 300 children will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. All of us have friends or family members who have fought that grueling battle. These days, with great advances in medicine, there’s an increasing chance the fight has been successful.
Yet, progress seems excruciatingly slow for those on the front lines.
A few years ago, one of my dearest friends, the godfather of my son, lost his daughter Margaux to Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare but vicious bone cancer. Another friend, a well-known author, has lost both a child and a grandchild to the disease. The survival rate for Ewing’s sarcoma that metastasises is a disheartening 10 per cent.
Ten per cent!
In this age of medical miracles, how can that be?
After Margaux’s death at age 14, I dedicated a book to her. Such a feeble gesture. I wanted to do more. Still do. Here’s how.
“Flesh & Bones,” the last of the Jake Lassiter novels, was published internationally to wide acclaim in 1997. Out of print for many years, it’s now a $2.99 e-book, with all proceeds going to the Four Diamonds Fund, a charity that pays for treatment of pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. In addition to providing world-class medical care, the Fund supports research in immunotherapy, carcinogenesis, and several other fields I can barely spell, much less understand. I can’t imagine a better charity. I’m hoping that the e-book will sell for years, bringing enjoyment to readers and support to a life-saving cause. Hoping, too, that others will be moved to directly contribute.
This is my second venture into “publishing for charity.” Last summer, my first novel, “To Speak for the Dead,” was brought out of retirement as an e-book and produced thousands of dollars for the Four Diamonds Fund. That book introduced the world to Jake Lassiter, a linebacker-turned-lawyer who searches for justice but seldom finds it. The book facilitated my career change from lawyer to novelist and has always held a special place in my heart. Now, good old Jake can help a cause that’s also dear to me.
“Flesh & Bones,” priced at $2.99, is available on Kindle, Nook, and at Smashwords. More information at Paul Levine’s Website.
In between the two, I’ve published the rest of the Lassiter backlist plus two stand-alone thrillers, and a collection of short stories. But nothing gives me more pleasure than helping a good cause with my writing.
Here’s a little background about the Four Diamonds Fund. In 1972, a 14-year-old boy named Christopher Millard was an aspiring writer. Or rather, he was already a writer. He’d penned a mythic tale about “Sir Millard and The Four Diamonds,” in the tradition of Sir Galahad and Sir Lancelot. What are those Four Diamonds? Wisdom. Courage. Honesty. Strength. All are needed in our daily lives, especially in children’s battles with a dread disease.
You have probably figured out that Chris wrote the story while in the throes of cancer. The diamonds of his story were allegorical. The quest was for life itself. After a three-year battle, Chris died, but his memory lives in the name of the Fund established by his family with the straightforward goal of “Conquering Childhood Cancer.”
Penn State students have contributed an astonishing $78 million to the Fund through their annual dance marathon. This year’s event raised more than $9 million alone.
One more thing. If each of us can contribute – just a bit – of courage, wisdom, honesty, and strength, maybe we can reach the goal of conquering childhood cancer.

John Locke Vegas Moon
Hey, the guy keeps pumping them out and my Kindle keeps getting giddy with delight that he is. Truly amazing! I read a number of character driven series, but already, John Locke has secured a spot at the top of my list. He just keeps cranking them out, and they get better and better and better. But let’s put the brakes on this love fest for a minute and give you guys an update on a few things in the world of G. Tomorrow I am posting on Paul Levine’s Flesh & Bones, an oldie but goodie, but the intense hook on this is that he is donating all the profits to children’s cancer research at Hershey hospital as part of the Four Diamonds fund. I was lucky enough to get to yap with Paul Levine last week on my blogtalk radio show, The G-ZONE, and we went over that and much more. Here is the link for that, he was on the show with Andrew Gross:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gelatisscoop/2011/04/20/andrew-gross-is-my-guest-today
Just as heads up, there are going to be two new full length novels from Trestle Press coming out this week that I think and everyone at Trestle thinks are going to make some serious noise: Phantom Wolves by Joy Spraycar and Cleansing Eden by Benjamin Sobieck. They should be available for purchase by this weekend, and I would suggest that you give these full length novels a read; they kick some major fanny.
Okay, back to Amazon Kindle’s most downloaded author. He is now downloaded every 7 seconds, every 7 seconds. I have to say that again, every 7 seconds. Think about that for a minute or two, do the math, it is nothing short of amazing. Great execution of plan though, the man is a genius and an innovator. I will continue to read everything he produces, no questions asked; there has yet to be a bummer in the group. He is what is between the virtual covers:
“In order to save his own life, Donovan Creed signs on as bodyguard to the most famous gambler in Las Vegas history, Jim "Lucky" Peters. Lucky, worth millions, has hit a losing streak and must raise a lot of cash in a short period of time from some of the world's creepiest people. It doesn't take long for Creed to learn that the person who holds the key to his survival is none other than Lucky's smokin' hot wife, Gwen, who has secrets of her own.
Preliminary reviewers term Vegas Moon "Hilarious!" "Uproarious!" "Funniest book in the series!" With Vegas Moon, "Locke hasn't just hit a home run, he's hit it over the fence, out of the park, and into the comedy hall of fame!"
Creed rules and my Kindle almost caught on fire when I was reading this, the pages were flying by so fast. The equal parts humor, action, plot twists, peculiarity, and now recipes, made this read a fun romp that flew by way too fast. For me,it is difficult to savor them as I want to just want to consume them as quickly as possible. My Kindle and I become one; I don’t even realize I am pressing the button to change the virtual page. The one thing I think that I have not mentioned in one of my posts about him, is John Locke’s passion. I think it comes through and is immensely evident. He tries to deliver what he thinks his fans are looking for and wanting in a read. With each new addition, he is constantly pushing the envelope, taking the characters in some new and twisted plot twist. When was the last time you read a novel that had someone walking a rooster on a leash or giving you the recipe for a nice vinaigrette? If you haven’t had the chance to read one of his novels, give them a try, maybe next novel he has, will be then downloaded every 5 seconds.

Donna White Glaser Author of The Enemy We Know guest post
I just recently launched my book, “The Enemy We Know,” on Kindle, and it felt amazing. It’s the first in the Letty Whittaker 12 Step Mysteries and it’s taken me ten years, two agents, and countless revisions to get here. And, yes, it was worth it. A friend of mine recently told me that she didn’t think she could have been that patient. Yet, despite how long and hard I’ve worked to see my books in print, I am not patient.
I am stubborn, however, which is just as handy, if not nearly so virtuous.
In fact, I looked it up. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, patient means “to wait without becoming annoyed or anxious.” So not me. Stubborn, on the other hand, is defined as “having or showing dogged determination to not change one’s attitude…on something.”
Nothing exemplifies the latter as well as Sophie, a petite and feisty beagle, that we adopted from the humane society years ago. Sophie, mistreated in her former home, had turned into a runner. Perhaps she would have been anyway; the breed is notorious for getting a smell in their nose and following it to the source, wherever that might be. So one of the things we had to be able to provide for Sophie was a fenced yard. No problem. We already had one--a nice white picket fence on a double lot. Problem solved.
Except Sophie got through it. Quite easily, in fact.
So my husband, Joe, put up two-foot high chicken wire around the 300-foot fence. This hurt his heart. Men don’t like applying flimsy metal stuff to wood. Not to mention the future hassles of weed eating, leaves getting stuck in between the wires and board, and the dreaded yearly painting. But he did it.
It worked for a while, too. Almost six weeks. Then, on Christmas Eve afternoon, little Miss Sophie learned how to wriggle and worry at certain spots to get through the barrier, and off she went!
I cried all afternoon. We could hear her running around town, baying madly. I pictured her being hit by a car. I envisioned her running so far away that we’d never find her. The kids, wavering between Christmas lunacy and lost dog syndrome, were frantic.
Despite my fear that she’d run afield, she stayed very close, unable to leave the intoxicating scent trails that had captured her attention. We went out after her in separate forays. We’d get close, waving tempting bits of ham and calling her name, only to have her scamper off when we’d get within five feet. She even ignored the chunks of ham that we’d throw at her rapidly departing behind. None of this--especially the waste of good meat--helped to endear her to my dear Joe. But her obsession had firm hold and her sniffing addiction held free rein. She was not to be stopped. We called the police station, the humane society, and all the neighbors who weren’t out celebrating Christmas and then we waited. We missed church. The kids and I cried some more. Joe ate the rest of the ham.
Finally, at midnight we got a call from the Pet Finder service (we’d put in a chip), who told us a Good Samaritan had discovered Sophie flopped on his porch, panting madly. So Joe set off in the middle of the night to go and, once again, rescue our wayward pooch.
The next day he shored up the hole. She made another one and was off and running. Many hours later, the coppers nabbed her burrowing into a garbage can and brought her back. We gave them Christmas cookies.
After Christmas I bought a running cable. Sophie slipped her collar--gone.
I got a harness. She slithered out and cleared the fence before I’d even made it up the porch steps to the back door. Nobody cried this time. She traversed the neighborhood for a solid thirteen hours, baying the entire time, following rabbit and squirrel scent in frenetic spirals through neighboring yards and driveways and down the middle of the formerly quiet streets of our idyllic small town. I got “looks” at the grocery store, but innate good manners of our fellow Midwesterners and the lingering Christmas cheer held, and nobody made a formal complaint. When Sophie eventually wandered home, she had road rash on her snoot from her frantic sniffing and slept for two days straight. I had to forcibly keep Joe from poking her awake every fifteen minutes to “teach her a lesson” in much the same way that Joe’s father had taught him following a similar night out howling.
The gloves were off. When she was finally ready to stagger back outside, I rigged the harness in loops through her collar and around her body in a convoluted doggy straight-jacket. I was tempted to staple it to her butt, but there are probably laws about that and the kids were watching.
It worked.
She couldn’t stay in it for long periods since it rubbed her under her pits and it took ten minutes to get her in and ten to get her out, but it worked. We knew, of course, that it was only a temporary solution but winter in northern Wisconsin didn’t allow for the digging of an invisible fence and we couldn’t afford one until after we’d paid off Christmas presents and assorted anti-running dog paraphernalia that we’d already sunk our savings into.
So the point of all this? I find myself, even after all of these years, still inspired by Sophie’s sheer persistence in getting what she wanted. After a lifetime of abuse and neglect, she still rose up to meet opposition in order to head out on an adventure. Now, I’m not a “Born Free” singing idealist who goes into raptures and forgets about practicalities. This bid for freedom was dangerous for Sophie, and she needed to be restrained for her own good. And I, for one, won’t be sharing my “isn’t it beautiful how she never gives up?” thoughts with Joe. But I came away from the experience with a better understanding of stubbornness and how to make it work for me.
Don’t give up.
Don’t let the fences stop you from your adventure.
Don’t let your past make you doubt the future.
Get over, get under, get through, get past, and get on with your dreams. It’s all out there waiting for you to sniff it out.

Marcia Clark Guilt by Association
Hello and welcome to Monday, and my usual State of theBlog weekly address! I am going throw in what is going on on the blogtalk show, The G-ZONE, also as there is going to be some serious fun and excitement this week also. To start with, please feel free to visit my new and exciting Author’s Page at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Giovanni-Gelati/e/B004XO846Q/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_2
Also feel free to purchase the Digital short Story Vincent Zandri and I collaborated on, ”Down Low-Dead”. As of this writing, we have received fourteen reviews, 13 five star and one 4 star review. I will make every effort to have my friends from Trenton with the bent noses find the four star person, and have a discussion with them, make them see the error of their ways, and to rectify this heinous error in judgment. The Amazon link for the story is :
http://www.amazon.com/Down-Low-Dead-Authors-Collaboration-ebook/dp/B004XN4XA8/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1
If you are an author and wish to have some fun with me and collaborate, drop me a line and let’s have some fun. Check out my wall here on Goodreads and Facebook to see the novels, Digital short stories and self-published works I am posting on this week.
Now to the blogtalk radio, I have a great lineup again this week Monday to Friday:
Monday: H.R. Toye & Cody Toye 4pm EST-Debtor’s Chip Series, Zorza the Alien,Toye Box Collection, and the soon to released Intangible.
Tuesday: Douglas Corleone 4pm EST Night on Fire
Weds.: Diane Sherry Case 12pm EST Starving in Malibu
Thursday: Big Daddy Abel 4pm EST The Open Mic series and The Jersey Shore Has Eyes ( An Author’s Lab/Collaboration with me to be released in May. It is a Hormedy, a horror/comedy)
Friday: Blake Crouch 4pm EST Run and many other novels.
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gelatisscoop is the link for the fun and merriment.
On to today’s novel: Marcia Clark, have you heard of her? Maybe the name rings a bell? I am not going over that stuff, I just want to discuss the novel, but yeah, she is that Marcia Clark, of O.J. Simpson fame.
The novel is interesting; it gives a pretty neat inside look at what possibly goes on in a prosecutor’s office and the heroine is one tough broad. Good stuff. Check out what is between the covers:
Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight is a tenacious, wise-cracking, and fiercely intelligent prosecutor in the city's most elite division. When her colleague, Jake, is found dead at a grisly crime scene, Rachel is shaken to the core. She must take over his toughest case: the assault of a young woman from a prominent family.
But she can't stop herself from digging deeper into Jake's death, a decision that exposes a world of power and violence and will have her risking her reputation--and her life--to find the truth.
With her tremendous expertise in the nuances of L.A. courts and crime, and with a vibrant ensemble cast of characters, Marcia Clark combines intimate detail, riotous humor, and visceral action in a debut thriller that marks the launch of a major new figure on the crime-writing scene.”
I enjoyed the read. The characters she has created seem real enough; the action comes pretty hard and quick, and the realism is there. I was most interested in reading this to see if she could create the world here, character inhabited, if she could draw me in, capture my interest and hold it for the duration of the novel. I was pleasantly surprised that she did and was glad. If you are a fan of this genre, looking for a good read on a tough as nails broad that makes no excuses but causes others to do so, then this is for you. If the novel fits, you must download it. I hope Johnny Cochrane turns over in his grave on that one.

Douglas Corleone Night on Fire
This has been a fun week of reading and writing for me. The content has been the key. Normally I get to see some pretty neat stuff, but when I get to dig into a character I just can’t get enough of, well it is that much more fun and then it turns to brief sadness. Why sadness? The usual thing, I have to wait another year to devour another installment of the series. Douglas Corleone and his character Kevin Corvelli is one of the characters I cannot get enough of. Let get to the action shall we?
“Kevin Corvelli---a hotshot New York defense attorney who packed up his bags and hung his shingle in Hawaii to dodge the spotlight---is deep in his mai tais at a resort when an argument erupts down at the other end of the bar. It’s a pair of newlyweds, married that very day on the beach. And since Corvelli doesn’t do divorces, he all but dismisses the argument.
That’s at least until the fire breaks out later that night, and he barely escapes his hotel room. Most weren’t so lucky, including the new husband. His wife, Erin, becomes not only the police’s prime suspect for arson and murder but also Corvelli’s newest client, and she has a lot working against her, like motive and opportunity, not to mention a history of starting fires.
The heat gets turned all the way up in Douglas Corleone’s scorching legal thriller Night on Fire, his second following the MB/MWA's First Crime Novel Competition winner, One Man’s Paradise.”
Hmmm, what is it that I love so much about this young series; I mean there are only two installments thus far. My simple answer is the flair and panache of the author. The setting is beautiful, Hawaii, and Corleone paints it in very vivid pictures. I can feel the breeze and hear the tide rolling in and out. For me an almost deaf guy, that is heaven. The dialogue is what has me so taken though above all else: witty banter, great takes on things, and a skewed vision of what is real and what is not. Sarcastic, sublime, smart ass, call it as you see it; it is all good and is just one facet of the author’s ability. It is very apparent, very quickly as you read, as to why this author is an award winner and deserves the read. I say hit the beach, enjoy the surf, check out the honeys and have a drink with Kevin Corvelli. A smile and well described rainbow await you.

Brett Battles The Silenced
Yesterday was just plain nuts, nuts, I tell you! Here is a brief recap of yesterday’s events, follow along with me and tell me if it wasn’t nuts. Vincent Zandri was nice enough to almost give away a major plot twist in our collaborated digital short story we just finished called: The Gang That Couldn’t Kindle Straight”. I think he was miffed that I let it spill he used my name and some guy named Tolstoy’s name in the same sentence. The exact context of how he used my name in conjunction with that, I will leave up to your imagination. Just so you know our Beta readers are tickled pink by the final product as it is a real hard boiled comedy the likes that have not been seen. The class at West Virginia University is going to be getting quite the surprise. Moving on, my blogtalk show The G-ZONE went nuts yesterday with filling time in May, June and this Wednesday. Yes this Wednesday! Here is the deal on this: Andrew Gross has been a scheduled guest, yes that Andrew Gross, NYT Bestselling author. Okay that in and of itself is news and a fun time. Along comes Paul Levine, Yes take pause, that Paul Levine. We talk a bit and BOOM, he is a guest also this Weds. So one show, two dynamic NYT Bestselling authors, what more can there be? But wait there is more, if you act now and write these dates down you will be guaranteed some really good fun and excitement: Dave Zeltserman June 10th, C.P White June 21st,Ray Ellis June 14th,Gary Ponzo June 30th,….! Crazy, fun, intense! That was just a part of my day yesterday. Throw in a conversation with Timothy James Dean the author of Teeth as he was nice enough to write me about my post from last week and you have an insane day. Oh yeah , throw in Big Daddy Abel and me going back and forth on his picture for his next Open Mic installment and an outline for our upcoming digital short collaboration and you have it all there in a nutshell. Now I return you to today’s regularly scheduled post.
I have been a fan of the Cleaner series since day one. I love Jonathan Quinn, I enjoy reading about the job he does and how he goes about doing it, and I enjoy the cast of characters he is surrounded with. Having said all that, you guessed correctly, I enjoyed reading this novel and getting my once a year dose of all of the above. Brett Battles entertained me yet again; I just wish the wait in between installments wasn’t so long, oh well. Here is what is between the covers on this novel of international intrigue:
“Professional “cleaner” Jonathan Quinn has a new client and an odd job: find and remove the remains of a body hidden twenty years ago inside the walls of a London building, before the building is demolished.
But Quinn and his team are being watched. Suddenly caught in the cross fire between two dangerous rivals, Quinn must unravel the identity of the body and why it still poses so great a threat even in death. Because a plot stretching from the former Soviet Union to Hong Kong, from Paris to London, from Los Angeles to Maine, is rapidly falling apart. And Quinn hasn’t been hired just to tie up loose ends—he is one. “
The plotline was exciting for me in many ways; one in particular is that we get to get a feel for what Quinn was before he was Quinn and what that has done to make him Quinn. His past has been a thing that was kept in the dark pretty much until this point and I enjoyed having some light shone on it. I fully intend to go over this when I interview the author this Thursday on my blogtalk radio show The G-ZONE. Jonathan Quinn is a multifaceted guy, with an ethical streak and determination that makes him tops in his field. His apprentice Nate is equally awesome and fun. The Cleaner series is one that I would keep track of if you are into the action/thriller/suspense genre. Or better yet if you enjoy a good read; this is one for you to add to your list.

Heywood Gould The Serial Killer’s Daughter
I hope that your Monday has started off well. Did you have a nice weekend? My posting week is going to be different this week as we have Easter at week’s end and that is generally a busy time at our home. The Scoop will not have any posts on it Saturday or Sunday, so I am going to move everything up a day or two here. Basically everything I normally have on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be dropped in on Thursday and Friday. Thanks for understanding. The G-ZONE this week is going to be chocked full of fun stuff and awesome guests. Today I have Zoe Sharp, then in order of appearance from Tuesday to Friday: Heywood Gould & EZreads.com (they are going to be a regular feature from now on), Andrew Gross, Brett Battles and a roundtable discussion, and finally on Friday Joanne Lewis author of Wicked Good. Pretty full week: or just the normal stuff here as we try to fit 10lbs. of sugar in a five pound bag. For my international friends, sorry, I don’t know the metrics equivalent for that. Okay off we go to today’s novel, what is between the covers?
“The master of the pulse-pounding literary thriller is back. Heywood Gould, award-winning screenwriter and novelist, author of bestselling novels/screenplays COCKTAIL and FORT APACHE, THE BRONX, returns with his biggest tour-de-force yet-THE SERIAL KILLER'S DAUGHTER. This one is a supercharged road trip that takes our two protagonists on a dark thrill ride to some very dangerous places. Someone is stalking college student, Hannah Seeley. Somebody would very much like to see her dead. Why? No good reason other than Hannah is the daughter of Arnold Seeley, a.k.a., the Robbinsgate Killer, convicted for 11 murders and now sitting on California's Death Row. The list of suspects who might want to kill Hannah is long. The motive is less clear. Panicked, she uses her seductive charms to enlist the help of her classmate, Peter Vogel. Soon, Peter finds himself neck-deep in trouble. He's in lust with Hannah, which can only be problematic. By getting involved with Hannah, he has set himself up as a target of her pursuers. After a close encounter, they have no choice but to hit the road in Hannah's little VW Bug. The chase is on. Hannah and Peter find themselves on the run from their pursuers while trying to discover the identities of those who want to kill them. It's a cross-country thrill ride, a cat-and-mouse chase involving murder, deception, and sheer survival. You won't want to miss it.”
I found the authors biography interesting as I did a little research for my interview with him tomorrow, Tuesday @ 12pm EST, on The G-ZONE my blogtalk radio show:
“Born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn, Heywood Gould got his start as a reporter for the NY Post when it was still known as a "pinko rag". Later he financed years of rejection with the usual colorful jobs-cabdriver, mortician's assistant, industrial floor waxer, bartender and screenwriter. He has written twelve books and nine screenplays, among them "Boys from Brazil", "Fort Apache”, “The Bronx", "Cocktail" and "Rolling Thunder". His latest novel, "Leading Lady", was a finalist for the 2008 Dashiell Hammett and Foreword Magazine award for literary excellence in crime writing and a bronze medal winner for the Independent Book Publisher's Award.”
Back in the day I did read “Boys from Brazil”, but that was many, many, many moons ago. So I will have to say this is my first read on a novel of his in the modern era. I think it cost me a dollar to see the movie. Yes that was not a typo that is how long ago it was since I have read anything this author wrote; I really didn’t pay much attention to stuff like that back in the day. I did pay rapt attention to this though. It is kind of hard not to. I can see why the likes of Tom Cruise and Paul Newman have played parts in his work, serious stuff. The action is intense, vibrant, and constant. Heywood Gould knows how to pace a great suspense novel from beginning to end. His characters are well thought out and described, the plotline is tight, and there are plenty of twists and turns. Was I satisfied? Yes I was. I wonder what big name star will be in this movie? I will definitely watch it; I am a big fan of the Redbox, and so I will plunk down another buck to watch this one. How time flies.

Teeth Timothy James Dean
Just to get to this first: Thanks to my Goodread’s friend Steven; he was nice enough to send me this novel to read. He basically told me he thought this novel was so much fun, that he was willing to put his hard earned money to use and UPS this rip roaring ride of a novel to me. Kudos, props and thanks again my friend. I took one look at this novel, shook my head a few times, said, “Really?” a few times, and then dove into it not really knowing what to expect out of it. Let’s get to meat of the matter and see what is beyond the over the top cover art in this novel billed as “The Epic Novel With Bite” :
“"MOVE OVER MOBY-DICK, JAWS AND JURASSIC Park; HERE COMES THE FATHER!" It is 1945. WWII may be over in Europe, but in the South Pacific, it beats on, hammer-and-tongs. Johnny Willman is a 20-year-old soldier in Supreme Commander MacArthur's Army - but he's no greenhorn. He's been a sniper in the hellish jungles of the South Pacific for three years. Johnny wants above all else to be sent with the General on "Operation Downfall" - the imminent invasion of the Japanese Empire. But before that can happen, there's a little thing called "Operation Teeth" - a rescue mission into New Guinea's heart of darkness. Johnny travels with two Australians - Dingo, the veteran Major, and Footy, their colorful pilot. From the beginning, things go wrong. They're attacked by "the Father," 4,000 lbs. of man-eating crocodile. It kills a soldier, and Johnny wounds it. From that instant on, it hunts him, until the final heart-stopping confrontation on the beaches of the South Pacific.
With Johnny's group is Katsu, their prisoner. Katsu has only one thing left — his family heirloom samurai sword. The three run directly for the Valley of the Cannibals — home to the most bloodthirsty warriors on the entire Stone Age Island. The lovely Gwyn saved Johnny's life, but to have a chance with her, he must meet her challenge to rediscover his heart.”
Okay to get to the nuts and bolts of this novel, and once I took some muscle relaxers to ease the pain from shaking my head in wonder at what I was about to enter into, I really enjoyed it. The style is pretty amazing. You can definitely get the feel that Timothy James Dean did his homework on the subject matter. The plotline is definitely unique, and fun. It is rare one gets to read about (and this is in no particular order): an enormous crocodile, surfers, cannibals, headhunters, WWII, and samurai’s. I was waiting for a ringmaster from Cirque De Solei or Barnum and Bailey to show up and start narrating it for me. This is your basic circus of fun and frolic. If you are looking for an entertaining read, scarf this up, have some popcorn, cotton candy, corn dog and water ice handy; this is just the thing.

Mark Miller The Fourth Queen
Mark Miller was nice enough to guest post here on Gelati’s Scoop many moons ago. I have been lucky enough to be invited to a Goodreads event Mark has going on at a Great Wolf Resort, here is the link for that: http://www.goodreads.com/event/show/114916-homeschoolin-week
Let’s get right into the action shall we:
“In the fairytale kingdom of Empyrean, time has moved on. The princesses of once upon a time, like Snow White and Cinderella, have grown old and become great queens. Now, their kingdom is in danger. A Forgotten Evil has returned. In a small village by the sea, two sisters, Zandria and Olena, begin a dangerous journey for Zandria to claim her birthright as a queen. Along their journey, they meet some unique friends and terrifying enemies while trying to survive places like the Dead Forest and escape troll-infested castles. Will they make it to the Crystal Castle in time to save Empyrean or will the sisters lose each other forever? One thing is certain, before their journey ends, Zandria will learn what it means to be The Fourth Queen.”
Okay, Mr. Miller seems to have a bit of stuff going on in and around his Empyrical World. All fun and all good. The thing I enjoy about his work is the genuine feel and the pleasant message he is trying to deliver with all this. The work can be shared with the kids, the writing is good and is interesting, and there are no wasted pages in the mix. I like that. When I try to share something with my youngest daughter if there are too many slow pages, her interest wanes, she gives me that funny look and fidgets a bit. There is none of that here. The thing about this week of posting for me, the self-pubbed and “independent publisher thing”, is amplified here today in Mark’s work and later today in J. Evan Johnson’s novel, the heart, the soul of it remains intact. We are getting the essence of the author without there being too much of it edited out. The unique intended message is not filtered out but remains intact and it works on all levels. Step into Mark Miller’s world with your kids, have a good time, and feel good about it.
For those of you that have missed Mark Miller’s guest post, here you go, enjoy, it has some good links in it:
“First, let me say thank you to Giovanni. It’s great to be here and hopefully meet some new readers!
My name’s Mark and as you can see from my own blog (http://empyricaltales.blogspot.com/) , I’m only starting out as a blogger. I still have a lot to learn, despite the upcoming release of my second novel. Like my own blog, I wanted to do something different for the Scoop. I have a Theory of Firsts: the first sentence, first paragraph, first page and first chapter have to hook me. Too many times, if I’m not feeling it by the end of the first paragraph, then I may not enjoy the book or sometimes even finish it (kind of like my eight minute rule for movies). Try it with something like Great Expectations. When I start reading that one, I can’t stop. I’m not comparing anyone to Dickens, simply giving a good example of how the first page creates that needed hook for me. I have a couple new books waiting for me on my shelf and randomly pulled down Knight Errant by John Jackson Miller (no relation). Haven’t read it, haven’t even creased the paperback spine. What I thought might be interesting would be to do a review of the first page and only the first page. Now, if you’ll excuse me for a couple minutes, I’m going to read the first page of Knight Errant. Be right back...
Sorry. That took longer than I thought because it had a prologue. So, yes, I’m a Star Wars nerd and yes, I read the whole prologue. Then I read the first page of the first chapter. You can call a technical foul if you’d like, but I’m not going to count the prologue. Interestingly though, both the prologue and the first chapter start in a similar way. Both have a seemingly random character performing a seemingly random task. I say seemingly because I have very little idea what may be in store. I do know that good storytellers introduce their important characters early, so hopefully Narsk the Bothan doesn’t get disintegrated on the next page. The first sentence of the first chapter is “In Sith space, everyone is a slave.” I know this story takes place about a thousand years before Luke Skywalker and I know the Sith are some bad dudes. To me, this is a good first sentence. Sets a tone that allows for change. Slaves need to be freed or free themselves. I would like to see this as the basis for the character arc, although we have yet to meet the main character, Jedi Kerra Holt. The whole reason for any story is the character arc, the fundamental change of the character. Arthur becomes a great king, Luke becomes a Jedi. I anticipate that in some way Kerra frees herself from either literal or metaphorical slavery. However, our focus is page one, Narsk, hanging upside down in a high-security ventilation shaft. Sounds like he’s a slave doing Sith dirty work. Except, he thinks he’s special. Then Miller lays on some heavy sci-fi making SW Universe references and going techie with a special concealment suit. These are the kinds of things that fans of this genre look for in a good read. Then that’s it for the first page.
Based on what I read, would I read the whole book? Of course. But remember, I’m a nerd. Star Wars aside though, Miller puts us right inside his character’s head. He puts us in an unusual predicament, literally a cliff-hanger on the first page. I have to wonder if Narsk is hanging upside down to clean the vents or is this how he is infiltrating a high-security area? Are you going to read this based on my opinion of the first page? If you’re a fan of Star Wars novels, then I expect this to be a good one.
Mark Miller is the author of The Empyrical Tales, a fantasy-adventure series. Book II: The Lost Queen will be available May 1, 2011. Look for the upcoming review on Gelati’s Scoop. For more info on the series and author visit: www.MillerWords.com or Facebook .”

Borislava Borissova The Starlight Prince
Looking for something interesting and unique? Maybe something a bit out of the norm, possibly to share with your children? Okay I have found something for you then. Check out what is between the covers on this one:
“A young boy lived alone on his tiny planet at the end of the Sagittarius galaxy. On his trips to other celestial spheres, he had seen that there were no lonely stars in the universe and even the most powerful one, the sun in the neighbouring Milky Way galaxy, had a friend - Nemesis. In a search for his first friend, The Starlight Prince caught a passing comet and, deluged by a haze of star-dust, entered the solar system.
Landing on the planet Earth he found himself on an unbelievably beautiful island. There, at the Valley of the Temples, the ancient Olympic Gods had been spending their summer rests for millennia. Far above the tree tops and hidden by the clouds, The Prince noticed The Little Olympic God who according to the Olympic allocation of duties was responsible for friendships. Amazed by his divine work destined to inspire friendliness in humans, the celestial boy was sure that The Little God could help him, too.
Trying to face him in person, The Starlight Prince remained on Earth. He followed a young teen company and took part of their unusual experience in an ancient Castle. This beautiful building claimed it functioned as a hotel but after their arrival to spend their vacation there it became the strangest hotel in the world with mysterious inhabitants, history, and secrets.
A great Master of magic was trying to harness the nature elements to become immortal as prescribed in a magical manuscript written long ago by the Olympic Gods. This text was given to the Little God of friendships for safekeeping.
During the long adventure the lonely celestial boy found his first friend, The Little Olympic God.”
Here is a little something about the author from her Amazon Authors page:
“Borislava Borissova considers herself a writer by soul because, although she have been working in the field of Human Resources for years, at home, in her free time, history and writing are the important passions of her life.
She is more than happy to share both of them with other people. She takes the readers through ages, through countless earthy and celestial places and lifelong adventures to meet her characters in their settings, to be part of their life...
Welcome and take a seat next to her to feel the stories :))) “
All that out of the way, I have to say that this a very unique read, but in a good way: the author has a very soft spoken and cute sensibility about her writing that I found refreshing. She attempts to go in places and reach people in a different way that I think points too many failings we have as people. She gets beyond the pettiness of life at times and tries to explain how hard it is to truly make good friends, ones that will last and accept one for whom one truly is. Good message, good adventure and a fun read, using the fantasy backdrop to take the edge off. Give this a try, share it with a friend.

Gary Ponzo A Touch of Deceit
Hello to everyone and welcome to the middle of the week. Joy of joys. Things have been hopping here @ Gelati’s Scoop/ The G-Zone and I couldn’t be happier. The rest of the week we have some really nice novels, and digital shorts to feature. Our guests the next few days are a great assortment of genres and personalities. Thursday in the G-Zone is Gary Ponzo, today’s featured author/post, and on Friday in a return engagement Leonardo Ramirez author of the graphic novel Haven and the soon to be released full length novel Haven. Not too bad. Let’s get to today’s novel and have some fun shall we? Did you know this novel has 41 five star reviews on Amazon Kindle? 51 ratings overall. Again, not too shabby. Here is what is between the virtual covers:
“Winner of the 2009 Southwest Writers Novel Contest, Thriller category!FBI agent Nick Bracco can't stop a Kurdish terrorist from firing missiles at random homes across the country. The police can't stand watch over every household, so Bracco recruits his cousin Tommy to help track down this terrorist. Tommy is in the Mafia. Oh yeah, it gets messy fast. As fast as you can turn the pages.”
I am a big fan of this kind of stuff. My fingers, excuse me, my thumbs were sore when I got done this. They couldn’t click fast enough. My eyes did not want to leave the Kindle. This is an awesome novel and a worthy read. The characters are great, the action intense, and Gary Ponzo knows how to craft a story. This puts the words, ”Bang for the Buck”, in a new light. The download is $.99, a great bargain. I want to include his bio in this post, because it goes a long way to explain the workings of this novel. He sounds like a blast, has lead a very colored life, and I am looking forward to yapping with him tomorrow on The G-ZONE. Here you go, read it; enjoy the day, and talk to you soon everybody!
“Author Gary Ponzo began his writing career over a decade ago by writing short stories. He quickly discovered a knack for the short form. In just five years he'd published seven short stories in various publications, two of which were nominated for the very prestigious Pushcart Prize.
His first novel, "A Touch of Deceit," took five years to write and one to pick clean. The story was born from his childhood experiences working in his father's candy store in Brooklyn, NY. His father was Sicilian and became friendly with some local members of a different kind of Sicilian family. Since Gary was just fifteen at the time, these family members would make sure he was protected whenever he would work late at night by himself. He soon discovered a side to the mafia not many people knew. It was these relationships which caused him to write about Sicilian FBI agent, Nick Bracco, who recruits his mafia cousin to chase down the world's most feared terrorist.
"A Touch of Deceit," went on to win the 2009 Southwest Writers Novel Contest, Thriller category. He is working on the sequel to the novel as well as continuing to publish his short stories. Gary currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Jennifer and two children, Jessica and Kyle.”

Notes From Underground Anthology The Literary Lab
I am going to get right into the action with this one. I mean, what exactly does the title mean? Here you go:
“Over the past year, one thing we've come to appreciate on The Literary Lab blog is the value of artistic freedom. To celebrate this freedom, we put together a collection of stories that were accepted before they were actually written. Our fellow writers gained entry into the anthology by impressing us with past work or proposals. From those early applications, we selected twenty-five of our favorite writers and told them simply that they had ten pages with which they could do whatever they want. We received poetry, artwork, and some amazing short stories that are both traditional and experimental.
Writers challenged themselves and only themselves to see what they could truly create when they weren't worried about rejection. In Notes from Underground, readers will find a range of emotions and personalities that is as broad as the range of writers that frequent our great online community. We hope you enjoy this collection as much as we do!”
I asked a question of these people,” Who are you people?” and this is how they responded:
“You asked about the editors. They’re a group of 3 writers/editors who run The Literary Lab.
About The Literary Lab Anthologies and The Lit Lab Blog, here is more about them personally:
ABOUT
The three writers here share a love for literary fiction, an art form that has sadly become associated with stuffy and inaccessible writing. Our hypothesis is that classical literary techniques will make any writing better, and the best popular fiction can also be the best literary fiction.
So grab your lab coats and safety goggles. We'll be creating some fantastic experiments. But only with your help. Interactive is our goal. Leave comments. Discuss. We'll do the best we can to answer questions and help everybody, including us, refine our craft.
Domey Malasarn- Domey is a writer from Los Angeles, CA. In 2008, he was a PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellow. He has been a finalist for Glimmer Train's Very Short Fiction Contest, first runner-up in Opium Magazine's 500-word Memoir Contest, and two of his stories were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. He is also a staff editor at SmokeLong Quarterly. Selected works online: God In Frogs, Dolores
I Am Waiting for My Dogs to Die, Display.
Scott G.F. Bailey - is a writer, musician and art-school dropout. He studied literature and political science at university and his short stories and essays have been published here and there. He's older than he looks, which bothers him a lot. Scott also blogs here and he is awfully fond of jam.
Michelle Davidson Argyle-Michelle is a stay-at-home mother, wife, and author who loves peanut butter and tomato sandwiches. You may think it's gross, but you should try it. She graduated from Utah Valley University with a BA in English/Creative Writing in the winter of 2002. To date, she has completed five novels, and has published several short stories. Her thriller novel, Monarch, will be released by Rhemalda Publishing in September of 2011, and her omnibus, Bonded, which consists of three fairy-tale themed novellas (Cinders, Thirds, and Scales), will be released Fall of 2012.”
To say that I enjoyed this is an understatement. The freedom that the authors, poets, and artists enjoyed are apparent in the works they created. It is very refreshing to get a read on something like this. Each piece is different, no two the same, and the way it is put together just flows. This one is a keeper, go for it and don’t look back; look forward to having some fun, without bounds. They knew none, neither should you.

John Locke A Girl Like You
I have some new things to talk about; yes besides the stuff I yapped about last week, yes, it is true. New stuff already! Here is the deal; I am adding a new segment to my blogtalk show, it is going to be all about writing process. Basically a panel of authors is going to discuss a facet of writing each month and hopefully something new can be learned and we can each get something from it. Let’s face it, gas is going through the roof, trying to get to one of these authorfests is tough and costly so I thought why not have one that is not only live, but also archived so you can go back to it anytime you want and get what you may need to help understand what you are reading or writing better. Just a thought, so the first one I have put together is going to be on May 11th at 11.30am EST. The panel you ask, who is it, what are the names you have collected for this intense show right out of the gate. Drum roll please!!Thank you. Here you go: Paul Levinson, Vincent Zandri, CJ West, B.R. Stateham, and last but not least Big Daddy Abel. I guess the joke would then go; What do you have when you have an Author/Musician/College professor /Media Guru, a Best Selling Kindle Author, a Self –Published Wizard, a Hard- Boiled multi-genre author, and a Rocker/Humorist? Why you have the first G-ZONE writers’ panel. I need to come up with a spiffy name for it; hopefully it will come to me soon. If you are an author and are within the sound of my post, contact me and I will be happy to include you in any of the activities I have going: The panel, The Improvised Digital short Story, guest posting, the blogtalk radio show, I think that is it. Just grab me and we can talk. Now onto our first novel of the week:
“A Girl Like You (A Donovan Creed Novel) is the next step in the evolution of hit man and former CIA assassin, Donovan Creed.
When Rachel Case goes to the doctor for a routine blood test, scientists are astonished to learn she possesses a gene no one else on earth seems to have—a gene that holds the key to protecting the world from the deadliest pandemic in history. When government operatives kidnap Rachel in order to develop a vaccine, her lover, Donovan Creed, realizes the only way he can find Rachel is to enlist the help of her current husband, Sam. A Girl Like You is “A sure-fire hit!” Another laugh-out-loud thriller in the tradition of Saving Rachel and Wish List. Every ten seconds, twenty-four hours a day, a John Locke novel is downloaded somewhere in the world! Authors, book reviewers, bloggers, newspaper and radio interviewers, and fans across the globe agree: John Locke is one of the most creative contemporary talents in America today.”
I just love John Locke’s style and I thoroughly enjoy the substance of his writing. Wait you say, this guy is one of the most prolific sellers on Amazon today how can I feature him in a week when I am just doing just self-published authors and “independent “ publishers. He is not a big six guy and is a fine example of how it is done. Notice the pricing on his work, $.99 per novel. Have you read one of these and been able to figure out the outcome, or not laughed at all? I was busting a gut in the very beginning, I am not giving it away, but if you cannot laugh at this stuff, then you have no funny bone or are totally devoid of having a good time at all. Is this Shakespeare, no, and thank God for that. This is some of the best entertainment you will receive for this kind of money. How he gets me to laugh, shake my head, and ask myself: How did he do that? or He got me again, is beyond me. I plan on saving my change up till the next one comes out, a buck is a buck, and I know I got my hard earned dollars’ worth in this. Donovan Creed rules! John Locke Rocks! I can’t wait to download another one into my Kindle.
