I have enjoyed rediscovering the comic book world through the Graphic Novels. To that end I have chosen to move to posting twice a week on them, Friday & Saturday. The response from the G.N. posts has pleasantly surprised me, and I have really enjoyed the feedback I have been getting from everybody. So why not double the fun; keep it coming everybody.
I have always enjoyed Spiderman, even when Marvel spun him off in many different directions and incarnations. Besides trying to make more money, they were trying to show him at different times of his life in different situations with varying writers and artists; it became overload. Sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing. The Ultimate Collection 2 has 14 different chapters in it and encompasses many different characters in young Peter Parker’s life as well many villains in Spidey’s world. Brian Michael Bendis has put together a very good Parker /Spiderman and integrated him well into his world. It is not the classic hero, but a very modern one, and it works on all levels. The foibles of adolescence and high school life, peer pressure, relationships, the press misunderstanding him, J. Jonah Jameson hounding him, and the villain’s total disrespect of him, Bendis totally gets it all. I also enjoyed the modern Nick Fury.
The dialogue he crafts is classic Spiderman. The trash talk, the quick wit. The villains and their origins in these stories were good, solid and well done. Mark Bagley’s penciling is top notch, the ink by Art Thibert & Eric Benson is awesome. They really added depth to the characters and brought them to life. I am a hardcore; old-timer with my origin stories, but this one won me over. I look forward to finding more Graphic Novels put together by this team, they are winners.
